Introduction
Knighton has been twinned with Varades in the Loire valley since August 2009. Varades is the chief town of a district with six towns: Belligné, La Chapelle Saint Sauveur, Le Fresne sur Loire, Montrelais, La Rouxière and Varades. It is situated approximately half way between Nantes and Angers.
How did you get involved in the twinning group ?
I have had a principle interest in French culture for many years; our French teacher thought joining the twinning meeting would be a great way to improve our conversational French She already knew of our regular trips to the Pyrenees Mountains, so I decided to become a host, long before I visited Varades itself.
To be a host you don’t need to speak French, as we match your language ability with your guests.
Simply a willingness to welcome our friends and participate in all activities during the visit.
I’ve made some fantastic friends through the twinning group and frequently get invited to visit whenever I’m in France.
What are your recollections of your first visit to Varades ?
The warm welcome from the Jumellage committee
Spending time with my host family
Immersing myself in their way of life
Lots of eating and drinking
Enjoying local excursions arranged for us. This could be a visit to the local Chateau, visiting the Wine Festival, or getting roped into some Breton Country Dancing! One year I enjoyed listening to local bands alongside visiting a Vide Grenier (Car Boot sale).
Building strong bonds of friendship between the peoples of Knighton and Varades.
